Clothing chain Forever 21 is closing 200 stores across the United States, and a Turlock employee has confirmed that the only remaining Stanislaus County location is likely on the list.

A Thursday afternoon call to the store at 2693 Countryside Drive revealed there is no official closing date, but employees have been told the store will have to close at some point.

Forever 21 opened in Turlock’s Monte Vista Crossings shopping center in late 2016, according to previous Modesto Bee reporting. Employees did not say when closeout sales would begin.

Forever 21 is “widely expected to file again for bankruptcy” to find a buyer for its remaining U.S. stores, the Los Angeles Times reported. “If no qualified buyer is found, the company probably would liquidate its 350 locations.”

Modesto location part of first round of Forever 21 closures

The Los Angeles clothing retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2019, closing over 100 stores across the country in an effort to restructure its brand.

Modesto’s Vintage Faire Mall location was one of the stores that went out of business six years ago.

Forever 21 moved into the mall in 2001. Then, it occupied a 6,500-square-foot space.

In 2009, the store moved from the smaller space to a three-story, 154,500-square-foot anchor spot in the mall’s Center Court after Gottschalks went out of business. It stayed there for a decade before being shut down.

Forever 21 was founded in the 1980s, selling women’s and men’s clothing, accessories, jewelry and more at 540-plus locations across the globe and online.
