Around a dozen locally owned restaurants opened in Modesto in 2024. Which is the best?

As it goes in the business world, some doors close while other doors open.

Though Modesto did see some closures of long-loved restaurants last year like Piccadilly Deli and Redwood Cafe, the region also became home to at least a dozen new eateries.

Which one do you frequent the most? Which has the yummiest menu item? We want to know your favorite Modesto restaurant of 2024.

We’ve excluded corporate-owned chains and franchises, focusing on family run and locally owned operations.

Which locally owned restaurants opened in Modesto in 2024?

Al Carbon Pollos a la Brasa, at 2400 Coffee Road, Suite C, serves Peruvian-style rotisserie chicken and other traditional Peruvian dishes. It opened Nov. 5.

Cariblue Restaurant, at 3801 Yosemite Blvd., serves Jamaican food including oxtail, jerk chicken and curry shrimp. It opened Sept. 27.

Cora at Roseburg Square is a family run restaurant that opened May 24 in Roseburg Square. The menu is a cultural fusion of Spanish, Filipino, Italian, Latin American and American cuisine.

Double B’s Burgers is a food truck opened by two brothers in Paradise Plaza on Sept. 24. The brothers plan to open the brick-and-mortar version of the restaurant on Beckwith Road in early 2025.

Gold Dust Pizza Express, an extension of a long-time Ripon pizza parlor, was opened by the Willey family Dec. 4 at 3440 McHenry Ave. It’s the restaurant’s fifth location in the Valley and first in Modesto.

Hawai’i Pot Shabu Shabu, at 3848 McHenry Ave., Suite 205, is the mainland’s first location of the restaurant and opened in the spring. The other six are in Hawaii. Shabu shabu is an all-you-can-eat, cook-your-own meal.

Slides Restaurant & Lounge is the second Central Valley location of the bar-slash-eatery that has 16 slider options. It opened June 22 at 1001 10th St.

Terracotta Poke Bowl serves Hawaiian, Asian and Mexican foods at 1801 H St., Suite A3. It was opened by a mother, father and son trio.

The Biscuit Basket, Thai Buri and Filipino Corner also opened in Modesto in 2024.
