Long-awaited national brands finally open this weekend at Modesto’s Vintage Faire Mall
Modesto’s Vintage Faire Mall will see two long awaited national brand openings over the Memorial Day weekend.
Both Bob’s Discount Furniture and Dave & Buster’s open at the northwest Modesto mall during the extended holiday weekend. The Bob’s Discount Furniture welcomed customers Friday in the former Dick’s Sporting Goods space and Dave & Buster’s debuts in the second floor of the old Sears anchor spot on Monday.
The two national companies fill large vacant spaces at Modesto’s largest shopping complex. Bob’s Discount Furniture, founded in 1991 in Connecticut, is the 10th largest furniture chain in the country. It has about 150 stores and takes in about $2 billion in sales annually. The company is known for its one-price system, that doesn’t rely on sales or promos. Still, the store is set up like traditional furniture sellers. with pieces displayed in room vignettes. Locations also offer complimentary coffee, ice cream, cookies and candy.
The Modesto site, part of the company’s expansion into Northern California, takes over the 33,000 square-foot space that had been home to Dick’s since 2011 (it had been a Circuit City before that brand went the way of the dodo bird). The building sat vacant for about two years.
Dick’s moved into its new space in the first floor of the former Sears anchor space inside Vintage Faire Mall in October 2020.
Opening above it on the former Sears space’s second floor will be Dave & Buster’s, the national chain of entertainment center-sports bars. The brand’s arrival was first revealed in early 2019. But construction ground to a halt after the chain closed down all of its locations at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Work restarted late last year, and now the new 34,688-square-foot combination entertainment complex and restaurant is ready to welcome guests starting Monday. The location is the brand’s first in the Northern San Joaquin Valley. The closest previous locations were in Fairfield, Milpitas and Fresno.
Modesto’s new Dave & Buster’s will feature arcade games, a full-service restaurant, full bar with cocktails and a 40-foot wall of high-definition TV screens.
Both the Dave & Buster’s and Bob’s Discount Furniture openings cap off a difficult two years for Vintage Faire Mall. The shopping center weathered openings and closings through the pandemic, and the loss of some of its well-known national brands including Coach, Abercrombie & Fitch, Gap and GNC.

The sale transferred the agency’s prominent building at the corner of Needham Street and College Avenue to the new company.
