New restaurant opens first Turlock site to lines, another new chain also coming soon
While we still may not know why the proverbial chicken crossed the road, we do know why a lot of folks in Turlock are — and it’s to get to that chicken.
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, a fast-food fried chicken chain, has opened its first store in Turlock. The new site, in the Turlock Town Center opened this week and already has cars lining up to try its fried chicken and Southern-inspired sides.
The new standalone restaurant on Golden State Boulevard is in the same shopping complex as the Smart & Final Extra! grocery store. The exterior of the vacant building has been remodeled, and the restaurant has a drive-thru which was packed earlier this week.
This is the first Popeyes to open in Turlock, after another proposed location near Monte Vista Crossings shopping center fell through a couple years ago.
The chain has seen its following grow and grow since it released its chicken sandwich in the summer of 2019. The sandwich reached viral status, bringing long lines and shortages.
Heck, we even did a taste test to see if it was, indeed, worth the hype and the consensus was, yep, that’s a tasty chicken sandwich.
The region already has existing Popeyes restaurants in Modesto on Coffee Road, Ceres on Hatch Road and Livingston on Winton Parkway.
The Turlock Popeyes, at 775 N Golden State Blvd, is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. For more information visit www.popeyes.com.
Another new restaurant chain also opening in Turlock
But Popeyes isn’t the only new chain making a splash in Turlock. The Sourdough & Co. restaurant, located in the new Warrior Crossing shopping center across from Stanislaus State, is set to open by mid-February.
The chain, based out of El Dorado Hills east of Sacramento, has some 40 locations across the state. The restaurants are known for their signature baked sourdough bread, which is used in sandwiches and soup bowls. The Turlock site will open in the same shopping center as the new and wildly popular Dutch Bros Coffee kiosk on Crowell Road.
If you’re looking for a preview and don’t mind a little drive you can head down to Atwater to check out the recently opened Sourdough & Co. on Bellevue Road. That location in the Save Mart shopping center was opened by the same owner opening the Turlock Sourdough, DJ Singh.
Singh said the Atwater site has become one of the busiest in the company already, and he expect the Turlock site to have an even bigger opening. The company is currently hiring for its Turlock site and expects to fill about 20 staff positions.
