Here’s a new downtown Modesto brunch spot that specializes in super-sized cocktails

Look, we’re all still in this seemingly endless pandemic and frankly could use a drink — or maybe two drinks, or maybe two bottles worth of drinks.

So one of downtown Modesto’s newly revamped spots is there for you, and then some, with its super-duper sized mimosas and cocktails. My Mimosas is the new breakfast and brunch offshoot of the Santo Cielo nightspot on J Street. Debuting last month, the restaurant has been open for outside dining and takeout since.

But, let’s be honest, the real draw is their absolutely enormous drinks. You can order share-sized margaritas, Bloody Marys, sangrias and — of course — mimosas. The mimosas are the restaurant’s biggest sellers and come in two sizes: Super, which has one whole bottle of champagne in it, and Mega, which has two — yes, two — whole bottles of champagne.

“Other places have big mimosas, we wanted even bigger mimosas. People get excited when they see them, and everyone wants to take a picture and share on social media,” said My Mimosas Manager Javier Bermudez.

The idea for the baby bassinet-sized cocktails came after Santo Cielo, the J Street nightclub that opened in 2019, had to close because of the ongoing coronavirus crisis and shutdowns. Without their evening spot operational, the owners switched gears to breakfast and brunch.

My Mimosas opened in mid-July and the restaurant has had lines and wait lists almost ever since. Because of the county’s continued spike in COVID-19 cases, indoor dining is still restricted. So the restaurant is trying to make the most of its patio and overflow patio area which have less than a quarter of the interior’s capacity of more than 200.

Just like its drinks, the food menu features big options from skillets and scrambles to waffles and pancakes. You also can pick from nine different styles of eggs Benedict, from seafood with crab and avocado to fajitas steak with grilled peppers and sliced sirloin. Plates range from around $10 to $16 and are nearly enough for breakfast and lunch — or possibly two brunches.

My Mimosas encourages a party atmosphere. Come on your birthday and they’ll pick up the tab for your cake and a round of shots. And, if you want to keep the good times rolling after brunch, the restaurant stays open for appetizers and drinks after hours from 4 to 8 p.m. on the weekends. Who says a mimosa large enough for a toddler to swim in can’t be enjoyed anytime of the day?

In fact, the spot is selling so many of their Super and Mega Mimosas (which cost a healthy $34.99 and $62.99, respectively) it’s had a hard time keeping the snorkel-sized straws, which festoon the drinks along with colorful fruit garnishes, in stock. Even if you aren’t a mimosa fan, you can still partake in giant cocktails like its Super Margarita and Super Bloody Mary (for $34.99 each) or Super Sangria ($24.99).

Now, we could certainly debate the ethics of getting one big drink to share amid a global pandemic, so let’s just encourage everyone to share them only with those in their immediate household. Also, let’s encourage everyone to call a taxi or ride share after imbibing in one of My Mimosas monster offerings, because even splitting two bottles worth of alcoholic beverage for brunch is a lot. Party responsibly so we can all live to party another day, folks.

My Mimosas, at 917 J St. in downtown Modesto, is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information call 209-248-7464 or visit www.instagram.com/mymimosasmodestoca.
