If you wanted to start the New Year with a big plate of pad kraprao from Tasty Thai, you were out of luck if you went to the its original Coffee Road location.
The restaurant abruptly closed its site at the corner of Coffee Road and Orangeburg Avenue at the beginning of January. But, fear not, Tasty Thai’s Floyd Avenue location in Village One is still open.
Tasty Thai manager Laureano Salva Jr., who ran both sites, said the Coffee Road closure wasn’t because of slow business or lagging sales, but instead over lease issues. Salva said their lease expired at the end of 2017, but they were unable to negotiate a new one that addressed their building improvement needs. So instead of signing onto another long-term lease there, they closed shop entirely and put all of the equipment, tables and even the outdoor sign in storage.
Salva said Tasty Thai’s owner plans to reopen a second site in a new location, but they are still searching for the perfect spot. The Coffee Road Tasty Thai opened in 1999. Then in 2008 another, larger Tasty Thai restaurant opened in the popular Village One Plaza. The Floyd Avenue site has double the capacity, 120 people, of the original site.

The Coffee Road restaurant served its last meals on Dec. 29. Salva said all its employees have transferred over to the Floyd Avenue restaurant for the time being. Visit the remaining Tasty Thai at 3020 Floyd Ave. or call 209-551-4200. And, don’t worry, they have plenty of pad kraprao.
