Great news for fans of the Knockout Burger: Nearly six months after closing due to damage from a fire, Scenic Drive-In will reopen on Wednesday.

Owners Matthew and Ramcena Grigorian said they are eager to get back behind the grill at Scenic. The drive-in is one of Modesto’s iconic spots, operating since 1956. Famed Modesto native George Lucas is said to have been a frequent customer when growing up in the 1960s.

“We finally got it done,” Matthew Grigorian said. The reconstruction following the Aug. 21 fire took longer than he originally anticipated due to the building’s advanced age.

But construction is complete, the health department has signed off, and on Monday, the Grigorians were making final preparations for reopening day.

“Our sign is coming at 3 (p.m.),” Matthew Grigorian said. They had it made earlier, but he spotted a couple of errors and sent it back. Tuesday will be devoted to stocking up on supplies and doing prep work.

The same employees will work at the drive in, along with a couple of new hires. The Gregorians also extended operating hours; Scenic will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Their first day back, they won’t make any money; proceeds will be donated to Modesto’s Sonoma Elementary School.
