Hyundai's New Aero Hatch Is A Tiny EV With Big Opinions
Hyundai showcased its new "Aero Hatch" at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Porsche also grabbed plenty of attention with its trio of Toy Story 5-inspired 911s and the eye-catching purple-and-pink Tree of Life Porsche. But tucked among the supercars and special editions was something altogether different.
We got an up-close look at Hyundai's all-new Ioniq 3, seeing both the standard model finished in Ice Blue Pearl and the sportier N Line in matte Fierce Red. As Hyundai's smallest EV yet, it may not have been the fastest car at the festival, but it certainly stood out.
Hyundai's New Aero Hatch
Hyundai first unveiled the Ioniq 3 in April during Milan Design Week, introducing the compact EV as an "Aero Hatch," a very fitting description. Developed around Hyundai's latest "Art of Steel" design philosophy, the Ioniq 3 blends clean surfacing with a bold silhouette. The standard model best highlights that minimalist approach. Smooth body sides, crisp detailing, and restrained styling give it a refined appearance, while the low nose and sloping roofline flow neatly into an integrated rear spoiler. Together, they help achieve a targeted drag coefficient of just 0.263, making the Ioniq 3 one of the most aerodynamic cars in its segment.
The N Line takes a more assertive approach. Larger 19-inch wheels, chunkier bumpers, more aggressive side skirts, and its matte Fierce Red paint make it much more of an attention-grabber. Both versions feature Hyundai's signature pixel lighting front and rear. One of the coolest details is hidden in plain sight. The four illuminated squares integrated into the lighting represent the letter "H" in Morse code, and the same motif carries through to the steering wheel.
Small On The Outside, Packing Plenty Of EV Tech
At 4,155 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, and 1,505 mm tall, the Ioniq 3 is compact by modern standards, giving it proportions that sit somewhere between a traditional hatchback and a small crossover – much like the new i20. Buyers will be able to choose from 11 exterior colors and wheel sizes ranging from 16 to 19 inches. Although we weren't able to photograph the interior, Hyundai says the five-seat interior prioritizes space and comfort while introducing its new Pleos Connect infotainment system. Based on Android Automotive OS, it promises a more smartphone-like user experience with expandable apps and over-the-air updates, the very first European Hyundai to do so.
Another Electric Coupe SUV
Underneath, the Ioniq 3 shares the E-GMP platform with the Kia EV3 and EV4. Power comes from a single front-mounted electric motor producing 145 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, while the entry-level version offers up to 214 miles of range. Its specifications are nothing exciting, but that's unlikely to be what people talk about. Instead, it's the styling that will persuade buyers.
While some appreciate Hyundai's willingness to try something different, others are growing tired of the ever-increasing number of coupe-inspired SUVs with sloping rooflines arriving from almost every major manufacturer. Built in Turkey, the Ioniq 3 will be sold across Europe and Australia, although it won't be offered in the United States. Whether you find it striking or awkward, one thing is certain: Hyundai's smallest EV is anything but forgettable.
