New businesses around Stanislaus, for ‘loverz’ of vintage, trampolines, Asian fare

Visits to thrift stores can be a shopping adventure. Some are more fun than others, but most can yield unique finds and treasures if you know where to look.

Diego Ruiz and his wife, Brenda Pedraza, are pros when it comes to sourcing the items the cool kids covet. They started about two years ago by reselling secondhand items with custom embroidery at vintage stores around town. Working with the stores, they became interested in expanding their business.

“We actually got familiar with the vintage clothing and secondhand clothing, and it really intrigued us. So little by little, we got into it,” said Ruiz. Their unique ability to source the most sought-after styles inspired them to open a store to share their finds with the community. On March 6, they opened Loverz Vintage on McHenry Avenue.

The store looks small from the front but opens into long, well-organized racks of T-shirts, pants, dresses and other clothing. Ruiz said their top-selling items as the weather heats up are early-2000s fashions and shorts.

As supporters of other local clothing vendors and designers, they feature items from a variety of local makers, including fashion designer Derick Cano and his brand Art Cano.

For the nostalgia collectors, they have cabinets of vintage toys, gadgets and video games. They even have skateboards and skate decks.

“We really aim to feature local vendors, and I feel like what we have is really exclusive. We have a little bit of everything, so anyone could come in, no matter the age, no matter what you’re into, no matter your background, it’s definitely very welcoming here. And I’m sure whoever walks in is going to find something to relate to,” Ruiz said.

Loverz Vintage is open Thursdays through Mondays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 305 McHenry Ave.
