Himalayan salt room in a Korean spa? New Modesto business provides unique service
If you happen to be invited to a spa for a day of bliss, saying ‘yes’ isn’t really a head-scratcher. In this case, it is all that and more with a head scratch, exfoliation, steam, massage, and a treatment all in one.
Providing Korean head and body scrub services, K Glow Day Spa introduces a popular treatment to Modesto, typically found only in larger metropolitan areas.
Opened at the end of 2025, the spa brings a unique experience to McHenry Village. Located within Modesto Esthetics Center and Wellness, the spa occupies a separate space on the left wing of the business.
Owner Angie Offer started the business after she moved here from Southern California, where Korean spas are abundant. “I realized that no one around here in the Valley has this, so I decided, ‘That’s it. I’m going to build one here,’ ” she said.
Korean spas differ from a regular day spa in that they focus on a series of hot and cold plunge pools and body scrubs to detoxify the body and improve circulation. They usually also offer several aromatic dry rooms to relieve stress and boost relaxation.
Offer built out a space for a steam room, dry sauna, and a Himalayan Salt room. “ I believe in the beauty of the salt room and the beauty of the salt itself. I saw it many times in Koreatown in LA, and I love it,” Offer said.
Salt rooms are a form of halotherapy, an alternative medicine using salt. Offer said she researched the benefits, which she said include improved lung function for people with asthma or allergies and relief of skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. She said she has heard from her customers that the therapy was beneficial . Apart from the potential wellness benefits, the room is a calming, quiet space aglow with a pink hue where Offer said people can spend an hour or two just relaxing.
To complete the Korean spa experience, Offer specializes in an hour-long exfoliation for both the head and body. In recent years, head spas have become a trendy treatment that claim to detox and clean the scalp, fostering better hair health and growth. The practice has roots in ancient Japan. Japanese salons and spas modernized this service in the ‘90s and 2000s, and the practice spread throughout Asia.
In cities like Los Angeles, San Jose, and San Francisco, this service is easy to find, but not in smaller suburbs. In recent years, the service has become more popular and has been added to the menu of salons and spas in the region, but Offer said what sets hers apart is a comprehensive experience, complete with added massage and sauna options after the service.
The hour-long treatment begins with an analysis of the scalp with a magnifying camera. Offer then places a weighted eye mask as she begins to exfoliate the scalp to remove dead skin and stimulate the hair follicles and circulation. The scalp is massaged with a blend of organic rosemary oils and then steamed under a cap. While the steam does the work, Offer massages the head, neck, shoulders, arms, and hands.
Finally, a halo surrounds the head to dispense warm water as the treatments are washed out and the scalp and hair are conditioned. Clients are then examined under the microscope again to compare the improved scalp.
“It was amazing, Angie was very thorough,” said Crystal Owens from Modesto. She has experienced this service at another spa, but said her experience at K Glow was superior. “She explained everything to me in detail, including what I need to improve on with my scalp. And then she showed me the after, and it was a huge difference. I will definitely be coming back,” she said.
For a full spa day, Offer suggests adding the full body silky scrub, which exfoliates the entire body with a sugar scrub and a collagen masque. She said this treatment promotes detoxification and circulation, revealing soft and moisturized skin.
After treatments, guests can enjoy time in the dry or steam sauna and the Himalayan salt room for the remainder of their stay. Some clients prefer to use those services without the treatments, and the salon sells spa passes for daily, monthly or unlimited use of the rooms. She also provides Swedish and deep tissue massage.
Offer has a background in healthcare; she was a nurse in the Philippines and continued after she moved to the United States. She moved to Northern California to be closer to family. She said this spa is a tribute to her mother and an outlet for her to continue caring for people.
“When people come here, they tell me they have experienced calmness and relaxation, even better sleep,” she said. “I just knew this experience was needed in the Valley, and that I can provide that.”
K Glow Day Spa is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and select Sundays and Mondays, by appointment only.
