National home furnishings chain Tuesday Morning plans to close its Modesto store as part of its latest bankruptcy.

The discount retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Tuesday, its second filing in three years. The Modesto store on Dale Road, across from Vintage Faire Mall, is among 31 stores targeted for closure in the state. The Texas-based company currently has about 480 stores and plans to shutter slightly more than half of them nationally for its bankruptcy restructuring.

Tuesday Morning last filed for bankruptcy in May 2020, citing store closures at the start of the pandemic among the reasons. At the time, the company had 687 stores across the country.

In its latest Chapter 11 filing, the company said it would close locations in “low-traffic regions while allocating the proper resources to remaining stores in high-traffic regions” as part of its restructuring. Some 267 stores will be closed this year, including other Central Valley locations in Clovis, Roseville and Folsom.

“After considering how best to address Tuesday Morning’s exceedingly burdensome debt, we have determined that the best path to reorganizing and transforming the company begins with a Chapter 11 filing,” Tuesday Morning CEO Andrew Berger said in a statement about the bankruptcy. “We look forward to taking steps that enable us to emerge as a stronger retailer that draws on a legacy of offering a unique off-price value proposition to our loyal customer base.”

Modesto has had a Tuesday Morning store for 21 years, since 2002. The off-price home goods seller first opened in the Save Mart shopping center at the corner of Standiford Avenue and Prescott Road. In 2017, it moved to its larger, higher-profile location across from the mall, a few doors down from Trader Joe’s and Lane Bryant.

The Dallas-based chain became known for selling name-brand home furnishings at deep discount. Founded by Lloyd Ross in 1974, the name came from his habit of selling excess merchandise from manufacturers on Tuesday mornings. According to the company, he chose that day “because he believed it was the first positive part of the week.”

The local closure will leave a considerable hole in the otherwise busy northwest Modesto shopping complex. The Tuesday Morning store fills some 12,000 square feet, one of the larger spaces in the strip mall which also includes The Party Guys and Big 5 Sporting Goods. Before Tuesday Morning moved into the center, its suite was home to the now-defunct discount footwear retailer Shoe Pavilion.

The Modesto Tuesday Morning store is in the midst of closing sales. The site is excepted to be open through March.
