Curious about the Tomato Queen? Drop by the McHenry Museum in Modesto on June 10

The McHenry Museum will host an exhibit on Tillie Lewis, an icon in the canning industry, and a talk by her biographer.

Kyle Elizabeth Wood will speak Saturday, June 10, about “Tillie Lewis: The Tomato Queen,” published earlier this year. It tells how Lewis rose from a Brooklyn tenement to become a leader in the food industry, starting with a Stockton tomato cannery in 1935. She later expanded into various fruits and vegetables there and in Modesto. She died in 1977.

The book was featured in a Modesto Bee story in February.

The talk will be at 2 p.m. at the museum, at 14th and I streets in Modesto. The exhibit is expected to be up in time for this event and will run through July. Museum hours are noon to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. Admission is free.
