What: Modesto Computer Users Group Technology Workshop

When: Thursday, 6 p.m.

Where: Round Table Pizza ClubHouse, 3848 McHenry Ave., Suite 145, in the Wal-Mart shopping center

Info: Terry Fix will give a presentation, “The Chromebook – the Google Chrome Operating System as Well as Chrome Apps – and the future of Android apps?" He will show how the Acer Chromebook CB3-131 is set up, how the operating system works and what applications work on the Chromebook. Admission is free and open to the public. What: Modesto Institute for Continued Learning registration

When: Thursday, registration from 9 to 11:30 a.m., class information from 10 to 10:45

Where: El Capitan Building of Modesto Junior College West Campus, 2201 Blue Gum Ave.

Info: Classes begin Aug. 22. MICL tuition plus parking total $50 for the 15-week semester (handicapped parking is free). Classes are held at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., with no need to preregister for each class. New members are encouraged to register at the meeting Thursday; returning members are encouraged to register online at MICLonline.org.

What: Modesto Discovery Shop annual art show and sale

When: Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: American Cancer Society Discovery Shop, 3440 McHenry Ave., Suite A-12, in the Marshalls shopping center at Sylvan Avenue

50 YEARS AGO: Modesto Junior College was one of 116 California colleges and universities to receive a share of $1.6 million from a student loan program. MJC’s share from the program was $19,025 and the funds would be made available through the National Defense Education Act of 1958, a bill that provided loans of up to $1,000 to students in need.
