What: Battle of the Badges blood drive
When: Aug. 23, 1 to 7 p.m.
Where: Ceres Community Center, 2701 Fourth St.
Info: The Ceres police and fire departments again will compete to see who can bring in more blood donors. Each donor gets to choose which side to support. Last year, the Police Department was the winner. Donors also receive a Battle of the Badges T-shirt.

25 YEARS AGO: Michigan-based Employment Research Associates announced that Modesto residents paid 10 times more in taxes to the Pentagon than the Defense Department spent in the city on contracts, salaries and facilities in the previous year. The controversial study found that $421.6 million in taxes went to the Defense Department, but only $40.1 million was spent by the Pentagon in Modesto. That was a difference of $3,500 per Modesto family. The study also found that 3 out of 4 Americans paid more in taxes to the military than was returned to them by the Pentagon.
