What: “How Turlock became the ‘City of Churches’

Where: St. John’s Assyrian Presbyterian Church, 450 S. Palm St., main sanctuary

Info: The second installment of the series presented by the Turlock Historical Society focuses on St. John’s, with a program by Dr. Milton David (son of original founder of the church), lead pastor Edward William Eissabake and church elder Sargon Eddy. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the building, the church location and the congregation. Refreshments will be served. YESTERYEARS

25 YEARS AGO: An Atwater resident, Steve Whitaker, the first pick by the San Francisco Giants in the June 1991 draft, would make his professional debut. Whitaker made his debut playing for the single-A affiliate of the Giants, the San Jose Giants. Whitaker stood 6-foot-6 and threw left-handed. Whitaker was a graduate of Atwater High School and pitched at Merced College before transferring to California State University, Long Beach, where he played in the College World Series against Clemson University.
