What: Modesto Junior College football kickoff dinner

When: Aug. 27, 6 p.m.

Where: Agriculture Center for Education on west campus, 2201 Blue Gum Ave.

Info: The fundraiser will begin with a social at 6 p.m., followed at 6:30 p.m. by dinner, auction and an opportunity drawing. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the Pirates’ head football coach, Rusty Stivers, and his assistant coaches. Tickets are $125 per couple and include two 2016 season passes to MJC’s home football games. Kickoff Dinner tickets may be purchased online at https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/mjcathletics ($85 of the cost is considered a tax deductible contribution).

50 YEARS AGO: The Federal Bureau of Investigation published its annual Uniform Crime Report for 1965, which showed serious crimes in Modesto had risen 7.6 percent during that year. The report took into account serious crimes: homicide, forcible rape, robbery and four other categories. Overall, the crime rate jumped 25.7 percent from 1960 numbers. That was 3,678 crimes reported in 1965, up 261 reported crimes from the previous year and 752 from 1960 levels.
