YESTERYEARS
40 YEARS AGO: It was announced that a strike began and 76 Northern California canneries shut down. The cannery workers union, Teamsters, were unable to secure a contract for 65,000 of its members. The negotiations were moved to Washington, D.C., and were overseen by James Scearce, chief of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. About 3,000 workers walked off their jobs in Modesto and Turlock during the crucial fruit and tomato harvests.
