Prisoners escape serious injuries in Highway 99 crash

Five prisoners being transported in a bus, as well as two of the guards watching them, were injured during a four-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 99 on Friday afternoon.

The collision involved the bus operated by a private company called Prison Transportation Services of America as well as two pickups and a car, said California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Parsons.

One of the vehicles failed to slow for stopped traffic south of Briggsmore Avenue, causing a chain reaction of rear end collisions. Parsons said investigators are still trying to determine who is at fault.

The prisoners – four men and one woman – and guards were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. No one else was injured in the crash.

Parsons did not know where the inmates were being taken, where they came from or for what crimes they were serving sentences.
