What: Senior Meal Program games
When: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, ongoing

Info: The Senior Meal Program is looking for card players to form a group to play spades from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays starting July 5. If you are interested in playing cards, enjoying good conversations and a good meal, call Kathy at 209-303-0704. Bunco and dominoes (Mexican Train) players also are sought to come and enjoy a meal on Wednesdays. Meals are for seniors ages 60 and older and a donation is requested. Reservations are required. Call 24 hours in advance at 209-303-0704. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. weekdays.
CERES
What: Patriotic concert
When: Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.
Where: Whitmore Park, North and Third streets
Info: The Gottschalk Music Center Concert Band will perform at the Ceres Concerts in the Park Patriotic Concert. The concert will be conducted by Ulices Chavez. The conductor and originator of the band, Ernesto E. Bucio, was born and raised in Ceres and conducted every concert between 1989 and his death in 2011. The band is carrying on under the direction of Matthew Cover and Ulices Chavez. For more information, contact Karen Bucio at buciok@aol.com.

100 YEARS AGO: City of Modesto attorney A.J. Carlson received word from California Attorney General Webb that bonds issued in a recent election for the city’s school district were invalid. The ruling was due to the way the school district was constructed, based on the city charter, which violated state law. The law’s provision required that bonds must be issued for two separate school districts, one high school and one grammar, and could not encompass the two as one. The bonds were supposed to be for a new high school.
