YESTERYEARS
50 YEARS AGO: The Modesto Savings and Loan Association announced plans to break ground on the firm’s new $500,000 headquarters at 10th and I streets. The firm had hopes of officially breaking ground March 1, and opening the building by Oct. 1. Robert E. Alford, vice president of the then-43-year-old savings and loan, said the firm planned to take the project to bid within two weeks of the firm’s announcement.
