Tracy man killed in accident on Interstate 5 near Patterson

A 29-year-old Tracy man was killed early Thursday as he was driving on Interstate 5 near Patterson.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash occurred at about 1:15 a.m. as the motorist was southbound on I-5, approaching the Sperry Avenue exit.

A CHP spokesman said the cause of the crash still was under investigation but the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. His gray 2006 Dodge pickup drifted and traveled along the shoulder of the highway. He then hit a big rig and trailer on the shoulder of the road and suffered fatal injuries.

There were no other injuries in the crash.
