Man attempts suicide, then walks into traffic

Detectives are looking for anyone who may have witnessed a possible hit-and-run accident on Modesto’s Yosemite Boulevard just after noon Wednesday.

Heather Graves, spokeswoman for the Modesto Police Department, said a 65-year-old man who was suffering from a “significant injury” after an apparent suicide attempt possibly walked into traffic on the busy street just west of Santa Ana Avenue.

Witnesses said they didn’t actually see the man get struck, but he was found in the road with injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle, Graves said. The witnesses did report seeing a vehicle they thought was involved leaving the scene.

The man also had an injury consistent with a possible suicide, but Graves said she could not provide further details.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital and underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon. He is expected to survive his injuries, Graves said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636. Tipsters can also email tips at www.modestopolice.com/crimestoppers, or text them to 274637 by typing “Tip704” plus the message. Tipsters may be eligible for a reward.
