YESTERYEARS

100 YEARS AGO: It was announced that a 3 a.m. fire at Modesto High School caused an estimated $8,000 to $10,000 worth of damage. One room and a section of roof at the west wing were gutted. No cause was determined, but Chief George Wallace blamed the fire on a damaged incinerator built against the outside room. The room damaged housed the journalism class and had the fire happened the next day, it would have damaged 1,100 copies of the school’s annual, The Sycamore, said Miss Virginia Garrison, who taught the class.
