Barnes & Noble in Modesto is participating in the bookstore chain’s first nationwide B-Fest Teen Book Festival from Friday through Sunday.

Events at the local store will include presentations by young local authors, a trivia contest, games, giveaways and more.

“We’re starting tonight at 7 p.m.,” said store Assistant Manager Robert Cooley on Friday.

“(Saturday) we’re doing a first look at some other new books, sneak peeks. There’s a new ‘Maze Runner’ book (a prequel by author James Dashner), new stories from the ‘Miss Peregrine’s’ author (‘Tales of the Peculiar,’ by Ransom Riggs) and some giveaway stuff. Then we’re having a couple of local authors.”

Two authors are scheduled for Saturday, including 18-year-old Johansen High School graduate Matthew Berlin, who will be signing copies of his novels from the “Legends of Lustria” series. “Embark” and “Prevalence” are the first two books in his trilogy.

“I am really excited to be involved in Barnes & Noble’s first ever B-Fest.” said Berlin, who self-published his first novel at 16, in a news release. “I love that they are catering to teens since that is definitely the market I write for.”

The second local author goes by the pen name Dez Demize, Cooley said. “She has done comic books. She’s coming in to show folks what she does and give a little talk about her writing.”

Saturday’s events begin with B-First sneak peeks at 11 a.m., according to the Barnes & Noble website. The author event is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Activities and games should continue until about 5 or 6 p.m., Cooley said.

For Sunday, B-Fest activities will run from 2 to 5 or 6 p.m., Cooley said. Staff still were working Friday to set up for Sunday a writing workshop and line up a couple more young authors, he said.
