40 YEARS AGO: It was announced that Modesto was approved for a second-year grant of $560,000 for housing rehabilitation and community development. The announcement of the U.S. Housing and Urban Development grant was made by the offices of Reps. John McFall, D-Manteca, and B.F. Sisk, D-Fresno. With the aid of a first-year grant of $251,000, the city’s housing program had inspected 68 dwellings for safety and health violations in west Modesto.
