Record high temperatures expected in Modesto this week

If the National Weather Service forecast holds up, Modesto will see some record high temperatures this week.

Forecasters said the high on Tuesday would be near 101 degrees. The hottest May 31 on record by the Modesto Irrigation District was 99 degrees in 1970.

Wednesday is expected to reach near 100. That’s shy of the record 102 degrees set in 1970.

Ditto for Thursday’s anticipated high temperature of 101 degrees; the June 2 record high is 102 degrees, set in 1996, MID shows.

Friday, though, could get as hot at 104 degrees, the weather service says. That’s well above the June 3 record high of 101 degrees, also set in 1996.

Saturday could be another 104-degree day, again breaking the 1981 record for June 4: 102 degrees.

The Valley’s early-season heat wave is of concern to the California Interscholastic Federation, whose 98th annual State Track & Field Championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Clovis.

“Due to the projected high temperatures in the Central Valley, the CIF is currently working with meet management and the Clovis Unified School District on modifying the event/stadium entry schedule on both days,” a news release Tuesday by the CIF says. It says a complete schedule of event times will be posted by 5 p.m. Wednesday at www.cifstate.org.

Throughout Stanislaus County, cooling centers will be open to give people relief from the heat.

Modesto Gospel Mission, at 1400 Yosemite Blvd., will have its cooling center open from 1 to 5 p.m. any day the temperature hits 100.

The Salvation Army also opens its Berberian Homeless Shelter at Ninth and D streets in Modesto as a cooling center on any day that reaches 100 degrees. Hours are 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

In Turlock, The Salvation Army center at 893 Lander Ave., has summer day camp and vacation Bible school running but will provide heat relief to anyone who needs it, a staff member said.

Turlock Gospel Mission, at 432 S. Broadway, is open between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily for anyone who needs shelter from the heat.

And Monday’s high is expected to be near 91. That compares to the record high temperature for June 6 of 102 degrees, set in 1977.
