MODESTO
What: AARP Safe Driver refresher course
When: Thursday, 8 a.m.
Where: Modesto Senior Center, 200 Bodem St.
Info: Refresher is for seniors who have taken the basic course. This will refresh an automobile insurance discount certificate for three more years. Fee is $15 for AARP members and $20 for others. Call 209-341-2974 for a reservation.
What: Disney-themed singalong
When: Tuesday, 6:15 p.m.
Where: Stanislaus County Library, 1500 I St.
Info: Musicians from the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra will play some favorite Disney songs, while music-education students from California State University, Stanislaus, lead the audience in singing along. Selections will include numbers from “Enchanted,” The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin” and “Pocahontas,” said Lyndsey Enoki, manager of the MSYO. The program includes flute solos by Isaac Barajas and Stephanie Rempel. Enoki said she believes lyric sheets will be provided. Kids are invited to wear their favorite Disney costume. The program will take the place of the usual story time in the downstairs auditorium. “It is a fun way to let people know about (the Modesto Symphony Orchestra) program ‘Disney in Concert: A Tale As Old As Time’ and it gives us a unique new program to try,” said Amber O’Brien-VerHulst of the library children’s department.
HUGHSON
What: Senior farmers market coupon distribution
When: Thursday, 4 to 6 p.m.
Where: Hughson Farmers Market, Hughson and Charles Avenue
Info: The Area Agency on Aging will distribute Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons. Recipients must be 60 or older and have a limited income ($1,815 a month for a household of one, $2,456 for two). The coupons will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. They may be used only at a certified farmers market. Each booklet contains $20 worth of coupons to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey.
GROVELAND
What: Bird walk
When: Wednesday, 8 a.m.
Where: Groveland Community Services District, 18966 Ferretti Road
Info: Jeanne Ridgley of the Central Sierra Audubon Society will lead a two- to three-hour bird walk on the GCSD property. Outings are open to community members, beginning birders and children. Participants are advised to bring drinking water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent and binoculars or spotting scopes and field guides, if available, and dress in warm layers. What: Come Back Kids meeting
When: Wednesday, 6 p.m.
Where: Stanislaus Industrial Technology Institute, 635 Walnut Ave.
Info: The Stanislaus County Office of Education will hold an informational orientation for those interested in learning how to earn a high school diploma through its Come Back Kids program. Come Back Kids is an independent-study program for age 18 and older. An orientation also will be held June 8 at the Stanislaus Culinary Arts Institute, 1040 Wakefield Drive, Oakdale. YESTERYEARS
25 YEARS AGO: It was announced that the city of Manteca was considering a 70-acre shopping center that would be designed to compete with shopping centers in Modesto and Stockton. The shopping center was to have been located on the south side of the Highway 120 bypass. The project was to consist of 900,000 square feet of commercial retail space and could have the capacity to generate 1,800 jobs.
