Toddler nearly drowns at Modesto Reservoir
While a dive team was searching for two teens presumed drowned at Woodward Reservoir late Sunday afternoon, a toddler nearly suffered the same fate at Modesto Reservoir.
In both circumstances, the children were not wearing life jackets.
Just after 5 p.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to the reservoir east of Waterford for a report of an unconscious 2-year-old girl, said Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Sgt. Anthony Bejaran.
The girl was playing in the water while her 6-year-old brother was standing on the shore; both were unsupervised. A bystander watching her own children saw the girl go under the water, Bejaran said.
The woman pulled the child out of the water and found that she was unconscious, he said. She and another bystander started cardiopulmonary resuscitation, at which point the girl’s parents were made aware of the situation.
“When AMR (American Medical Response) arrived on scene, the child had been revived,” Bejaran said. She was taken to a Modesto hospital for additional care.
“We highly recommended that if you are going to be in the water to wear your life jacket,” Bejaran said.
