What: Stanislaus County chapter of the CTA/NEA Retired meeting

Info: The Stanislaus County chapter of the CTA/NEA Retired is an organization that promotes the well-being of retired California Teachers Association members by advocating for pension security, promoting member benefits, participating in social activities, and addressing other issues of mutual interest. Thursday’s quarterly meeting will feature the election of officers, reports on political developments, and a discussion of upcoming social activities. All retired (or soon to retire) teachers are welcome to attend. Hors d’oeuvres will be served. For more information, call 209-485-0818.

Info: Talk of The Town Toastmasters, Club #4295 invites area residents to meet members and hear a keynote speaker discuss the importance of leadership and communication skills for today’s professional. Talk of The Town Toastmasters provides a supportive and positive environment where members have the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills. Along with the keynote speaker, members and guests will enjoy a regular Toastmasters meeting that include Table Topics (impromptu speeches) and evaluations.

YESTERYEARS

50 YEARS AGO: It was reported that the president of the Modesto Junior College student body, Stan Thompson, and the past president, Edwin Genesci, competed in a log-sawing competition for the school’s Frontier Week. They posted an identical time of 33 seconds in the competition. The festivities would end the next day with a western-style costume contest and dance.
