YESTERYEARS
25 YEARS AGO: The Merced City Council approved a $35 million conference center with a 150-room Holiday Inn for the downtown area. The council was acting as the Redevelopment Agency, which received funding from property taxes in a multiblock area including the downtown business district. The agency would pay only for the center and parking facilities, estimated at $16 million, while the cost of the construction of the hotel was to be handled by Sheldon Pollack Corp. of Santa Monica.
