Modesto City Council watch (5/10/2016)

The Modesto City Council will meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the basement chambers of Tenth Street Place, 1010 10th St. The council is expected to:

  • Consider authorizing applying for a grant with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department to the California Board of State and Community Corrections for a Strengthening Law Enforcement and Community Relations Grant for as much as $850,000. A city report says the Police Department and Sheriff’s Department would work with other agencies with a specific focus on the underserved and high-crime area of south Modesto that will address crime, safety and qualify-of-life issues. The grant would require Modesto to provide an estimated $181,626 match. The city would meet its match requirement through personnel and supplies.
  • Hear a presentation from Stanislaus County CEO Stan Risen on the Focus on Prevention effort that is now looking at long-term solutions to homelessness throughout the county. The effort also eventually will work on initiatives that strengthen families, invest in children and reduce recidivism.
  • Approve a budget adjustment of roughly $118,000 to increase the total cost of the city’s November election and February mayoral runoff election to roughly $518,000. The city was reimbursed with about $165,000 by Modesto City Schools for the cost of having its board candidates and other items on the November ballot. Besides the mayoral election, the city had three council races and several ballot measures on the November ballot.
