What: Kidz Day
When: Tuesday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Street corners in six county communities: Modesto, Turlock, Patterson, Ceres, Riverbank and Oakdale
Info: Hundreds of volunteers will sell special-edition newspapers for donations of $1 or more. The effort is a one-day annual event with all proceeds supporting the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Center in south Modesto. The special publication, produced by Morris Communications, is dedicated entirely to the Red Shield Center, with articles and photographs detailing the educational, athletic and spiritual programs offered by the center to at-risk youths and their families.

YESTERYEARS
25 YEARS AGO: Stanislaus County, mainly the Housing Authority, was awarded a $2.58 million grant to purchase suitable three-bedroom homes throughout Modesto. As many as 30 families would be helped with the grant, but more than 1,500 families remained on a waiting list seeking Housing Authority help.
