Man beaten by sticks and brooms in South Modesto

A man in his 20s was jumped by a carload of young men who beat him with sticks and brooms in south Modesto on Saturday afternoon.

Stanislaus sheriff’s Lt. Mike Parker said deputies were called at about 3:30 p.m. to the 600 block of Inyo Avenue for the report of a man who had been assaulted. They found a Latino male with lacerations to his head, arms, neck and chest. The victim was transported to the hospital.

Parker said he reported walking along Inyo Avenue when a SUV pulled up alongside him. He then said six to eight Latino males, in their early to mid-20s, got out of the car and proceeded to beat the him with broom handles and sticks. The suspects then fled eastbound on Inyo Avenue in the vehicle, which was described as a light gold or silver SUV.

Parker said there is no initial indication that the victim and the suspects knew each other. Deputies are currently searching the area for the SUV along Crows Landing Road.

The assault occurred after the popular annual Cinco de Mayo parade along Crows Landing, but Parker said there is no connection to the event.
