Hughson High’s Relay for Life raises more than $29,000 to fight cancer

In Hughson High School’s fourth annual Relay for Life, held Friday evening through Saturday morning, 22 teams – 304 participants – raised more than $29,300 for the American Cancer Society.

“We are the only student-led Relay event from Bakersfield to Chico,” said Brooke Nawrocki, public relations chair for the Hughson High student council. “Last year, we raised over $45,000, securing us a spot in the top five for most successful Relay events in the small-school bracket.”

The school’s leadership class runs the event, from team captain meetings to event logistics. Teams include campus clubs and community groups.

In its first year, the Hughson High Relay raised $54,000. In its second year, $50,000.

From about 7:30 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday, teams walked the school track and also raised money by buying food and playing games set up at trackside booths.

Relay for Life of Modesto, a 24-hour walk, is coming up Saturday at 9 a.m. at Johansen High School. To learn more and sign up, go to bit.ly/1XegYsG.
