Cooler temperatures, possibly rain headed to Modesto

If the early part of the week, with temperatures climbing near 90, was a precursor of sorts to summer in Modesto, the next few days will be a return to spring.

National Weather Service forecasters predict temperatures dropping to the mid-70s starting Wednesday, with a chance of rain and maybe even thunderstorms by afternoon. It’s not all that much of a chance, though: The service puts our odds at 20 percent.

Communities in the higher elevations are more likely to see rain, and more of it. “The activity will be scattered in nature and will impact travel here and there,” the service said in a bulletin.

Thursday is more of the same, with a slight increase in the chance we see some rain by Friday. Highs will be in the low 70s, with overnight lows dropping into the mid-50s.

The weekend looks cloudy and relatively cool, with a continued chance of rain through Sunday.
