What: 80th anniversary tour of Sonora and Columbia

Info: Pilots of the Aviation Country Club of California will repeat a historic tour of Tuolumne County in celebration of the 80th anniversary of a 1936 trip. As reported in an article in the Union Democrat newspaper at the time, Tuolumne County residents turned out in great numbers Memorial Day 1936 for a reception in Columbia with historic stagecoaches, followed by the Sonora Union High School Band leading them from St. James’ Episcopal Church, and a formal banquet at the Sonora Inn in the evening. The Aviation Country Club of California will be busy during its three days in the area with sightseeing, shopping, dining and special entertainment. YESTERYEARS

100 YEARS AGO: An ad by the Sun Auto Stage announced a fare deal for travel between Modesto and Oakland, including other cities in the Bay Area. Beginning May 5, the fare would be $2 one way and $4.50 round trip. A passenger would depart from 11th and I streets at 8 a.m. and arrive in Oakland at noon. The return trip would leave at 4 p.m. and arrive in Modesto at 8 p.m. Information and tickets could be found at Husband’s Pharmacy; the phone number was 961.
