What: Congressional candidate forum
When: Wednesday, 6 p.m.
Where: Stanislaus County/City of Modesto Chambers, in the basement of 1010 Tenth St.
Info: The League of Women Voters of Stanislaus County will host the forum for candidates running to serve the 10th Congressional District of the House of Representatives. This is your opportunity to hear the candidates state their positions and answer questions on issues important to district residents. It is free and open to the public. Question cards and voter registration forms will be available.
EMPIRE
What: Friends of the Empire Annual Book Sale
When: Friday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Where: Empire Library meeting room, 18 Abbie St.
Info: A variety of fiction and nonfiction books will be available, as well as children’s books. Books are priced from 25 cents to $1.

50 YEARS AGO: Tri-Valley Growers announced it would be building a $10 million “super cannery.” This was contingent upon finding a suitable home in the county that could provide a good water and sewer system, transportation and an adequate labor force.
