What: “Turning Stars into Gold”
When: Wednesday, 7 p.m.
Where: Stanislaus State’s Main Stage Theatre, 1 University Way
Info: Most of us have some gold in our lives, in wedding bands and watches, earrings and pins. But where does that gold come from? Professor Enrico J. Ramirez-Ruiz of UC Santa Cruz will answer that question: It comes from the stars. Stanislaus State Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 282 and the College of Science are sponsoring this event, which is free and open to all. As Ramirez-Ruiz will explain in his talk “Turning Stars into Gold,” the creation of stars involves creating and changing elements from one to another through the process of nucleosynthesis. This process, which began with the first stars, continues to this day; without it, life on Earth would be impossible. Ramirez-Ruiz will discuss issues ranging from the nuclear physics involved to the astrophysics responsible for forming precious elements such as platinum and gold. For more information, contact Arnold Anthony Schmidt at Stanislaus State at aschmidt@csustan.edu.

25 YEARS AGO: In a softball game against Central California Conference rival Modesto High School, Cyndi Hewitt of Davis High School came within one out of a perfect game. The Spartans still won the game over the Panthers, 1-0. Hewitt had retired 20 straight batters before walking Modesto’s Rosa Jimenez with two outs in the seventh inning. A week before, Hewitt threw a perfect game against the Panthers, winning 10-0.
