Success & Service: Gallo’s Martin chairing Maddy Institute

Larry Martin, a senior adviser with E.J. Gallo Winery’s Legal Department, is the new chairman of the Kenneth L. Maddy Institute at California State University, Fresno.

Martin replaces former Assembly member Juan Arambula (I-Fresno), who had been chairman since Jan. 1, 2013

The state Legislature in 1999 established the institute in honor of state Sen. Ken Maddy, whose 28 years of public service demonstrated the successful application of personal integrity, legislative know-how and bipartisanship to the governance of the state of California, according to a news release from the institute. Its mission is to “inspire citizen participation, elevate government performance, provide nonpartisan analysis and assist in providing solutions for public policy issues important to the region, state and nation.”

Teen aids pet shelter

After finding a small stray dog last summer, Ripon High School student Shannon Wesley took the pooch to the Ripon Animal Shelter. Her experience with Ripon officers and staff at the shelter compelled her to create Cause for Paws, a donation effort to assist the pets and staff at the shelter. With help from her mother and a former teacher, donated items including towels, toys, shampoos and bedding were collected for the pets and dropped off at the shelter Monday.

Retirement community recognized
