Duplex fire displaces two in central Modesto

A two-alarm fire in central Modesto on Saturday night displaced two people and caused $85,000 of damage to a duplex, officials said.

At 7:45 p.m., the Modesto Fire Department was dispatched to the 100 block of Drake Avenue off McHenry Avenue and south of Briggsmore Avenue on a report of an explosion.

Firefighers confirmed the explosion in one unit of the duplex, which was destroyed. There also was a structural collapse.

One woman was injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

The American Red Cross was assisting the occupants with housing.

The Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District provided support. The fire, which remains under investigation, was contained in 20 minutes.
