The Modesto Junior College Music Department will present a Spring String Recital on Thursday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall on East Campus. Admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted.

What: MJC offers Spring String Recital

When: Thursday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Music Recital Hall on east campus, 435 College Ave.

Info: The students of MJC’s Director of Orchestra and Strings Anne Martin will perform solo works by Bach, Corelli, Dvorak, Haydn, Seitz and Vivaldi. The program will open with the elementary strings class playing “Indian Lament,” “Can Can,” and “Cripple Creek.” The String Orchestra will present works by Gallo, Sibelius and Verdi. The popular Scottish-Irish reel “Mari’s Wedding” is included on the program. Pianist Yan Yan Chan, DMA, will accompany the students. Anthony Houth, cellist, will finish the recital with a performance of Brahms’ Sonata No. 1 in E Minor. Admission is free. One-day campus parking passes are $2 and can be obtained at ticket dispensers in the student parking lots. For more information, contact Martin at 209-575-6646.

What: Bird walks, bird box sale

When: Walks April 6, 12 and 23; sale April 16

Info: Bird walks and the semi-annual bird box sale are on the Central Sierra Audubon Society calendar for April. Walks are planned in the Groveland area on April 6, Salt Springs Valley area on April 12 and Fitch Ranch Road off Yosemite Road on April 23. The bird box sale will be April 16 in San Andreas. Outings are open to interested community members, beginning birders and children. Participants are advised to bring drinking water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent and binoculars or spotting scopes and field guides, if available, and dress in warm layers. 100 YEARS AGO: The Modesto Theater announced its entertainment lineup for April 3-5. On April 3, the dancing couple of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Castle would be featured, performing “The Whirl of Life.” On April 4 there would be a musical comedy by Gus Hill, “Bringing Up Father.” And on April 5, D.W. Griffith’s 12-reel motion picture “The Clansman.”
