A Turlock woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide in Sunday’s stabbing of two people. Maribel Gonzalez, 40, is in the Stanislaus County jail with bail set at $250,000.

At 10:05 p.m. Sunday, Turlock police went to the 700 block of West Olive Avenue after a report of a fight.

They found two women, ages 44 and 26, with stab wounds. The older victim, who is the 26-year-old’s mother, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening wounds and remained in critical condition as of Monday, according to a news release from the Turlock Police Department. Her daughter suffered injuries that were not life-threatening; she was treated at the scene.

The fight started because Gonzalez was looking for her cellphone and believed the victims’ family members had taken it, said police Sgt. Stephen Webb.

A witness followed Gonzalez as she walked away from the scene and directed officers to her location, police said. Gonzalez was taken into custody without incident in the 600 block of Columbia Street.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Frank Navarro at (209) 664-7319.
