What: League of Women Voters’ Lunch and Learn Program

Info: Judy Sly, retired from The Modesto Bee after a 40-year career as a reporter and editor, will speak on “So Many Words, So Little Wisdom,” and how a well-informed person can try to distinguish fact from fiction or opinion. The luncheon (chef’s choice) is open to the public. The cost is $13, and reservations are not required. For more information, call the league office at 209-524-1698.
What: “Black in America: A Continuing Conversation”
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Where: Modesto Junior College East Campus, 435 College Ave., in Forum 110
Info: Presented by the MJC Civic Engagement Project, this conversation continues last semester’s discussion about the difficulties faced by young black men, “especially given the growing tensions in today’s society between the police and communities of color,” organizers say. Based on the questions received from the audience at the prior event, community panel members will discuss specific issues related to accountability, implied bias, stress and trauma of policing events on minority members, law enforcement policies and procedures and the role of the community. What: Great Valley Museum free admission day
When: Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Modesto Junior College West Campus, 2201 Blue Gum Ave.
Info: The museum is celebrating its one-year anniversary in the Science Community Center. Any adult may explore the exhibits and bring up to five children free of charge. Complimentary refreshments and snacks will be available in the lobby while supplies last. The museum also will offer $5 planetarium shows throughout the day.
