It was a traditional dinner in a nontraditional spot, thanks to firefighters who stepped in to save the day.

Salida’s First Congregational Church had planned its annual corned beef and cabbage dinner to commemorate St. Patrick’s Day on Thursday. But a driver crashed through the wall of the church kitchen on March 7.

The Salida Fire Protection District invited the church to hold the dinner at Station 12 on Salida Boulevard. Church members took over the firehouse’s kitchen, set up tables and served up corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and carrots.
