Fire atop Modesto medical building quickly extinguished

Modesto firefighters quickly extinguished a fire that began atop the Modesto Urgent Care building at 1908 Coffee Road early Friday morning.

The Modesto Police Department called in the report of flames showing from the roof of a commercial building at about 1:30 a.m., said Modesto Fire Department Battalion Chief Randy Anderson.

The first fire unit on scene saw smoke on the roof, so forced entry into the building, Anderson said. No fire in the interior or overhead was found, he said.

Firefighters got to the roof and found a wooden parapet around an air-conditioning, ventilation and heating unit on fire. They tore the wooden frame apart and put out the fire before it could intrude into the building.

Damage was limited to some ceiling tiles and was estimated at $1,000, Anderson said. There was no immediate determination of the fire’s cause, which remains under investigation.
