YESTERYEARS
40 YEARS AGO: A $5 million discrimination settlement was reached for women and minority workers in 70 Northern California canneries, including in Stanislaus County. As part of the settlement, workers would receive back pay and affirmative action in promotions. The judgment came from Judge William Orrick in San Francisco’s U.S. District Court. He had approved the settlement offered by the 28 canning firms that bargained with the Teamsters Unions.
