Success & Service: Patterson doctor honored by state physician group
Dr. David Canton of Patterson received the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of California Special Recognition Award for 2016.
The organization’s award recognizes the activities of individuals who have contributed to the growth and recognition of the profession. Special Recognition Awards may be presented for personal as well as professional achievements.
Semiretired after having served as chief medical officer for the Shasta Community Health Center in Redding, Canton has a long history of public service, including holding chief medical officer positions for a federally qualified health center, the National Disaster Medical System and the U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic area.
Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of California advances the practice of osteopathic medicine as an independent, scientific and complete system of medicine for the restoration and preservation of good health, and to present programs of education and information that contribute to the practice of osteopathic health care.
University Women set for annual recognition event
The Turlock/Modesto branch of the American Association of University Women will honor area women for their accomplishments and services to their communities. The event is March 24 at Berg Hall in Turlock’s Covenant Village and will honor volunteers from Turlock’s Carnegie Arts Center and Modesto’s McHenry Mansion.
Carnegie Director Lisa McDermott will accept her organization’s award, while Carole Dovichi, who heads the McHenry Mansion’s docents council, will represent the mansion.

Pitman High sophomore’s art to hang in U.S. Capitol
Nairobi Mellow, a sophomore at Turlock’s Pitman High School, won the 10th Congressional District’s art competition. Her work will be on display in the U.S. Capitol Building alongside winners from other districts over the next year. She won for her piece titled “Those That Stomp.” She also will be invited to Washington, D.C., this summer to be honored at a reception for winning students and where the national winner will be announced.
Andres Mora of Riverbank High School took second place and Turlock Christian’s Gyuha Hwang third. Their works will hang in Rep. Jeff Denham’s Modesto office.
Modesto firefighters climb Seattle building for leukemia/lymphoma fundraiser
Eight Modesto firefighters were among the 1,793 participants who successfully climbed the Columbia Center last weekend in Seattle to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Modesto’s team included Doug Rice, Andy Harrison, Scott Hall, Doug Escalante, Kieran Malone, Paul Cole, John Walker and Ryan Winton. They climbed 69 flights of stairs – encompassing 1,356 steps and 788 vertical feet – in full fire gear, with five of the eight completing the climb in less than 20 minutes. They’ve raised nearly $7,900 and still are accepting contributions through their online page.
Fundraising professionals name board for 2016
The Association of Fundraising Professionals Yosemite Chapter, which represents Stanislaus, Merced and San Joaquin counties, announced its board members for 2016. All are from nonprofits and foundations. The board includes President Amber Flores, President-elect Karen Williams, Tammy Menezes, Brittany Hinesaar, Carolyn Texiera Gomes, Karyn Bryant, George Boodrookas, Kathy Hobby, Monica Ojcius, Michele Proffitt, Melissa VanDiepen, Carole Richard, Joan Hart and Dena A. Medeiros.
Modestan serving on carrier in Pacific
Antonio Pacheco of Modesto, an aviation boatswain’s mate (handling) 1st class, is serving aboard the USS John C. Stennis carrier, which is part of the Great Green Fleet providing security and stability in the Indo-Asian Pacific.
