East Modesto collision leaves bicyclist in critical condition

A bicyclist was in critical but stable condition after being struck by a sport-utility vehicle Friday morning in east Modesto.

Sgt. Aaron Tait of the Modesto Police Department said the SUV was heading north on Roselle Avenue at 9:46 a.m. when the bicyclist rode out of Village One Plaza and into the path of the vehicle.

The man on the bicycle was struck. The driver of the SUV remained on scene.

Tait said it was too early to determine the speed of the SUV, but witnesses said it was going below the 40 mph speed limit.

Heather Graves, police spokeswoman, said they have yet to identify the bicyclist, who was taken to a nearby hospital. He had several pieces of identification, none of which were his.

Officers were attempting to identify him through a thumbprint. Graves said it was too early in to know where the IDs came from or if they were stolen.

The busy street was closed to traffic throughout the morning.

An hour after the accident, the bicycle remained in the road along with a red backpack and what appeared to be poker chips that spilled out from a partly open case.
