Info: Brian Kennedy, biologist, CEO and president of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, will speak on “Aging and Chronic Disease – A View From the Aging Side.” According to a MAPS news release, “The potential to directly impact human health span is emerging from aging research, and this approach, if successful, will dramatically impact medical care in this century, which is characterized by a rapidly aging global population. Kennedy will describe how agents extending health span might be developed to improve human health.” The event is free. Info: Parents and prospective students can learn more about the school and its collaboration with Modesto Junior College. VCHS will distribute registration information to new students entering grades nine through 12 for the 2016-17 school year. Application packets for the current school year are available in the school office or on the website at www.valleycharterhighschool.org. Currently, there are a few openings in grades nine through 11. 50 YEARS AGO: It was announced the Ripon Almond Blossom festival would crown its Miss Almond Blossom in the day’s activities. The three contestants up for Miss Almond Blossom were Corinne Hoogendoorn and Deanna Gall, both Ripon High School students, and Elena Gardner, an Escalon High School student. The previous year’s queen, Lannis Leop, would be in attendance and fire Chief Nick Van Dyken would crown the winner.
