MODESTO

What: League of Women Voters’ Lunch and Learn Program

When: Thursday, noon

Where: Ridgeway’s, Century Center, Oakdale Road at Orangeburg Avenue

Info: Julie Johnson, Title IX compliance officer at California State University, Stanislaus, will talk about how institutions of higher education that do not fulfill the Title IX and Clery Act requirements will be cut off from receiving federal funds for research and scholarship aid for their students. The luncheon (chef’s choice) is open to the public. The cost is $13 and reservations are not required. For more information, call the league office at 209-524-1698.

What: All Ages Coloring Day

When: Thursday, 3:30 p.m.

Where: Ceres Library, 2250 Magnolia St.

What: Patterson Garden Club monthly meeting

Where: Las Palmas Mobile Home Estates, 250 E. Las Palmas

DENAIR

What: Electronic waste recycling

When: Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon

Where: Denair High School parking lot, Lester Road

Info: Denair Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization, is having a free electronic waste collection. Accepted items are TVs, monitors, laptops, CPUs, e-readers, CD/DVD players, printers, fax machines, copiers, scanners and cell phones. All proceeds benefit the students of the Denair Unified School District. The foundation has supported field trips, computer equipment, classroom learning materials, motivational projects, the arts and scholarships/fees for higher education.

YESTERYEARS

50 YEARS AGO: It was announced that Stanislaus County’s unemployment benefits drew more than $1 million a week by the 12,000 that were on the unemployment roll. This was a contrasting factor as unemployment numbers had improved at both the state and national level. However, the jobless rate in the four counties of the Stanislaus district had continued their seasonal spiral due to the addition of persons claiming benefits not previously covered, including farm workers.
